The purpose of the blanket is to transfer the image from the plate cylinder to the printed sheet. Printing blankets have a small amount of give to allow for the thickness of the paper to be transferred through. Over time blankets can become worn out and flattened and need to be replaces. Keeping blankets in good condition is a large factor in overall print quality.

The printing blanket needs to be at a specific thickness in order for proper image to be transferred. If there is too much pressure between the printing blanket can cause extra dot gain and alter the overall look of the final job. To help achieve the proper blanket thickness blankets sometimes have a matching under blanket.
